CV and Statement
“Eloquent, transcendent entities, with an almost spiritualized expressiveness, the glow of which reads like an utterance.”
~Gary Michael Dault, Artists’ Odysseys
Dana Ranke holds an MFA in Painting from Rochester Institute of Technology, and BFA in Painting from University at Buffalo, The State University of New York. She is a non-resident artist member of Salmagundi Club NYC. She works representationally, interpreting a variety of subjects in oil, gouache, and charcoal.
Statement
Spirit of place or moment inspires my work, together with the nature and properties of the materials used to make the work. I depict subjects that are readily available to me and places I’ve lived or visited. Painting from life is my preferred method, especially for portraits and still life. My paintings of more complex natural and built environments tend to be larger and reliant on photos and on-site studies. In these works, I use graticola systems to disrupt reference imagery and stay connected with my original intent for the piece. Ultimately, the process of painting is more important to me than any single type of scene or genre, provided the subject is authentic to my own direct experience.
